But What Was She Wearing?
On the evening of 3 March 2021, Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old marketing executive, was kidnapped in South London, England, as she was walking home. Metropolitan Police officer Wayne Couzens falsely arrested her under the pretense of having breached COVID-19 regulations and drove her to woodland where he raped and strangled her, before burning her body and disposing of her remains in a nearby pond. The case sparked widespread debate about the safety of women and gender violence in the UK.
Inspired by the protests (and the abhorrent police reaction to them), I felt compelled to begin shooting this new collection that I am calling: But What Was She Wearing? In this series of photos I touch on:
Women’s safety
Misogyny
Drink and Needle Spiking
Being asked to “Smile luv”
And the general poor behaviour of men
These photos will be on display on March 31st 2022. If you’d like to come and visit me and my work in Dumbo, Brooklyn please add your name to the mailing list at the end of this post. (Men are welcome I promise!)
